Mob attacks Arundhati Roy's house Oct 31st 2010

[This message from Arundhati Roy arrived in my inbox this morning. The allegation that the news media is colluding with those orchestrating the violence is extremely serious and requires a response.]
SOMETHING FOR THE MEDIA TO THINK ABOUT
A mob of about a hundred people arrived at my house at 11 this morning (Sunday October 31st 2010.) They broke through the gate and vandalized property. They shouted slogans against me for my views on Kashmir, and threatened to teach me a lesson. The OB Vans of NDTV, Times Now and News 24 were already in place ostensibly to cover the event live. TV reports say that the mob consisted largely of members of the BJP’s Mahila Morcha (Women’s wing). After they left, the police advised us to let them know if in future we saw any OB vans hanging around the neighborhood because they said that was an indication that a mob was on its way. In June this year, after a false report in the papers by Press Trust of India (PTI) two men on motorcycles tried to stone the windows of my home. They too were accompanied by TV cameramen.
What is the nature of the agreement between these sections of the media and mobs and criminals in search of spectacle? Does the media which positions itself at the ‘scene’ in advance have a guarantee that the attacks and demonstrations will be non-violent? What happens if there is criminal trespass (as there was today) or even something worse? Does the media then become accessory to the crime? This question is important, given that some TV channels and newspapers are in the process of brazenly inciting mob anger against me. In the race for sensationalism the line between reporting news and manufacturing news is becoming blurred. So what if a few people have to be sacrificed at the altar of TRP ratings? The Government has indicated that it does not intend to go ahead with the charges of sedition against me and the other speakers at a recent seminar on Azadi for Kashmir. So the task of punishing me for my views seems to have been taken on by right wing storm troopers. The Bajrang Dal and the RSS have openly announced that they are going to “fix” me with all the means at their disposal including filing cases against me all over the country. The whole country has seen what they are capable of doing, the extent to which they are capable of going. So, while the Government is showing a degree of maturity, are sections of the media and the infrastructure of democracy being rented out to those who believe in mob justice? I can understand that the BJP's Mahila Morcha is using me to distract attention the from the senior RSS activist Indresh Kumar who has recently been named in the CBI charge-sheet for the bomb blast in Ajmer Sharif in which several people were killed and many injured. But why are sections of the mainstream media doing the same? Is a writer with unpopular views more dangerous than a suspect in a bomb blast? Or is it a question of ideological alignment?

You are right to point out this media-rightwing nexus
It's deplorable that they will stoop to this. Media watchers must make the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India impose restrictions on these white-collar goons.
I can testify to the fact that only news reporters with uncontroversial views as hired at companies like Times Now because I myself was denied a job at a second interview when I questioned why the major news channels covered the same top stories, all had red, white and blue graphics, etc.
Singpore ST's character assassination of Roy
Far away from India, a journalist of Indian descent takes issue with Roy's political activities. Quite interesting but not ethical.

Strange how Indian arguments
Strange how Indian arguments about why Kashmir should not be free echo in numerous ways British colonial arguments against Indian independence during the anti-colonial movement. The amount of writing in western academia on whether the Indian state and/or "democracy" would survive after the British left is stupendous. The question of Kashmiri freedom, however, involves much more than the machinations of the Indian and Pakistani states.
I urge you to reconsider the question of whether India should be called a "terrorist nation". Firstly, the statement that India constitutes a "nation" itself is highly debatable, given the number of nationality movements that have arisen, and not in the recent past but since before 1947. Kashmir, as we know, is a case in point. But also, the question 'what constitutes a nation' itself can be applied to India, to put it crudely, given the lack of cultural, social homogeneity across the country. Perhaps the only really pervasive across-subcontinent social structure is caste, and I wonder whether you would like to build the "nation" around that. (doesn't matter, it already is so.)
But let's come to the other aspect of that term - terrorist. What do we say about an occupying force (and this is not only in Kashmir and states in the north-east, Operation Greenhunt is as much an occupation) which has/is systematically crushing all forms of dissent? And is it then docile?
Finally why not get emotional about the ways in which the Indian state is becoming more and more authoritarian, subjecting people to inhumane kinds of torture, grabbing land and destroying livelihoods? Is the "nation" a bunch of corporates? The question is really the kind of nation that one wants the "Indian nation" to be. I'm glad Arundhati has raised concerns over the dangerous direction in which we are progressing today. And also demonstrating that there are people, who individually or collectively, are willing to fight it.
Bajrang RSS Goondas! Stop your shenanigans!
Please leave Arundhati Roy alone, and let her speak her mind. Let the Indian people decide whether she makes sense, or speaks for them. Repression of Muslims is condoned by BJP, but repression of Arundhati will not be tolerated by decent Indians. We condem this provocative action in the strongest possible terms. Cease and desist, RSS!

we read your writing, and hear you speaking out for justice and rightness ... really sad to hear that this kind of stuff is happening, shows what misguided patriotism can be
Don't be emotional about Kashmir
Arundati, do you know why cant we let Kashmir be free...Because India is not a terrorist nation and Pakistan's ISI abates terrorism. In the wake of letting Kashmir be independent we will have to designate twice the number of army personnels for its protection from Pakistan.
Mind you, if Pakistan once takes over Kashmir, Delhi, Jaipur, Chennai, Hyderabad will not be far for that Nation.
I don't know why such an educated lady like you wouldnt think about all this and be emotional about Kashmir, we (India)is a docile nation and I am proud of the fact that we never in our history initiated any war but its our duty to protect the people of our nation and our Motherland.
Hope I make sense to you...

Attack on Arundhati' s house
This attack is condemnable. We may disagree with anybody's comments and opinions. But we have to respect their right to express their opinion.
Love You, We are with you
You are one of my idols, just to let you know, we are with you,and above all the truth is on your side. Love and respect.
Bwahhh...there must have been just a demonstration..
This fraud is trying to become a martyr now...
Think this...the only photograph of the event in the media is a photograph of a broken flower pot that could have happened by someone tripping over it...i have a couple of flower pots in my house that are broken as well...
This woman is media savvy and and mainstream media loves to bash up nationalist forces...i am sure one of the two below would have happened:
a) Breaking News over and over again showing the attack on national TV all day long with We the People, Big Fight, India Answers blah blah...taking all the pleasure in beating up everyone from BJPMM to Hindus in general with some Ram and Krishna thrown in...
b) This woman would definitely have engineered better pictures to her own martyrdom
HUH
U need to be booked for sedition, you don't even deserve 1 minute of attention from people of India leave aside a mob attack.
Action of Criminals n Hooligans should be condemned harshly
It seems media n criminal hooligan nexus can go to any extent in withering the Democratic Values....If there is limit to free speech thn thr should also be restriction on this criminals who r loose free to fix the individuals who dares to speak truth bluntly and democratically....

Are you aware of what you speak
I challenge you, to a debate, on kashmir, or even the naxals. anywhere, anytime. after that, you must promise, never to show your face in public, or to live in any city, in the world, with a population of more than 1000 (you can live in a village, if you please).
Mr Veiled
Are you ready for debate on kashmir or naxals with Arundhati Roy anywhere anytime but if have so much confidence in yourself why you are sending your brave challange Anonymously,
Arundhati Roy its OK she is wrong in her saying that that Kashmir is not a integral part of india, although she is correct because the same thing other nonmuslim intellectuals saying, hence natrually have some reason behind their statement,
As far sa awareness is concern you too not aware what ordinary citizen of Kashmir is facing,
I too not in favour of that Kashmir is not a part of india, it is but disputed and very comlipated it could not be solved by merely suppressed kashmiriz fy forces,I suggest you to read history and please do not be emotional, Ms Roy is a good person but saddened for ordinary people who suffered lot by their leader like abdullaz, geelani, farooq etc
